March | A Year in HistoryWe may not be old enough to pen our memoirs, but, for us, our 25th anniversary is a chance to remember what has been happening in Russia and the world over these years. We’ll try to remember and describe events that happened globally, in Russia, and of course, at HSE, during this entire period. For example, we will consider what songs we listened to when ICEF was founded, how we used to dress when the development strategy was created, and what were the hot issues in the world when we were opening our first major faculties. Everyone is invited to participate in this prestigious project. Details will be forthcoming in the near future. |
March | Competition My HSE HistoryThe history of a university is impossible without the stories of the people who work and study there. For example, there could be an entire archive of such stories chronicling HSE’s 25 years. So, we’ve decided to bring them together, in texts, photos, and videos. Thanks to this effort, HSE will have a precious collection of memories. Furthermore, the authors of the best stories will get prizes, and all participants will receive well-earned respect and popularity. All staff, no matter how long they have been at HSE, and all graduates, no matter the year of their graduation, can participate. |
April | E-learning MarathonOnline courses are a recent invention, but HSE has long seen their potential and was in love with them from the very beginning. For the ‘anti-versify’ year, lecturers and students of online courses are planning a surprise and will meet offline several times. An additional bonus will be a competition offering some interesting prizes. |
May | Unveiling the Monument to the Unknown ReviewerOver its history, HSE has developed faculties, study programmes, and even new research ‘stars’. For our next step, we will unveil a monument. This is a monument to those whose names are unknown, but without whose daily heroic deeds, the system of reviewing wouldn’t work or even exist. With this in mind, we have decided it’s high time to right this injustice, and erect a monument to the ‘anonymous reviewer’. However, we are not going to organize a ceremony, which traditionally takes place when monuments are unveiled. On the contrary, what we want is an informal event… in an even anonymous atmosphere. |
May | Third International RLMS-HSE ConferenceOne of HSE’s first international projects - the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE) – is also celebrating its 25th anniversary. It is rightfully considered as a unique project in Russian academic research, since it’s the only source of longitudinal data on the activities of Russian households. |
May | I Draw HSEA university is a place where adults work. This means that we see HSE through the eyes of adults much like ourselves. Therefore, isn’t it time to change the situation and expand our perspective? What about allowing your children tell us about HSE through their drawings? Do some of your children don’t know anything about your job? Then, this is a great opportunity for you, to tell them about HSE and show it to your children. And they won’t stay away for long, since they are all creative and talented, and many of them like to draw. We believe that you haven’t seen HSE this way before. |
May 20 | EconomfestHSE’s Faculty of Economic Sciences would like to remind the other, younger faculties that they are the only one featured in the University’s title. Let’s spend this day as if we are still the only school of economics! |
May 28 | HSE MarathonHSE has developed several generations of athletes. If we don’t manage stress through exercise, there won’t be any staff left! We can run from the darkness of ignorance, breathtaking stupidity, and bad grades as fast as we can. The first generation of HSE students didn’t have physical training lessons, but today they seem to love it more and more. Also, the number of runners among our staff is impressive. This marathon will attract everyone from HSE who loves running a dozen kilometers. |
Summer | |
June | The Whole World at HSEWe are starting the summer with a major international festival! Obviously, academics are people with no borders, and an interesting academic problem can unite people from different countries better than years of official visits and formal negotiations. However, globalization can’t be reason to forget one’s own roots. On the contrary, it’s easier to share traditions today, especially when there is an interested audience. Let’s see what cultural and national traditions HSE has attracted over a quarter of a century! |
June | Partner WeekWe’ll bring all of HSE’s partners from various countries together in one place. We’ll ask them about their best practices, and tell them about ours. We expect it to be a stimulating and satisfying experience. |
June | ‘Stealing the Wheels’HSE has already given up paper-based books, prevented plagiarism in student papers, and combatted lack of choice for students. Is there anything else we need to do? Or improve upon? And not only in education, but also, in the administrative process? Maybe someone already has a proven method of developing Nobel Laureates? We don’t want to reinvent the wheel. Instead, we are going to collect all the best practices from the world’s leading universities and give those interested an opportunity to study and implement them at HSE. At the same time, we’ll be able to see whose ‘wheels’ would work better for HSE – those of Stanford or Sorbonne. |
July - | Everyone is Occupied!Celebrations are an act love, but the admissions period is still a must! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |
Autumn | |
September | HSE’s NeighbourhoodSurprisingly, Myasnitskaya Street is more than just bars, restaurants and shops. Its history is rich with academic locations. We’ve studied them all, and are ready to share our knowledge with all Muscovites and guests to Moscow. |
September | ‘Research at HSE, Both for School and for Life’Any academic anniversary, even if it’s an ‘anti-versary’, gives cause to contemplate how the walls of one’s alma mater saw the emergence and development of research, which is vital for students, teachers and the institution as a while. With this in mind, researchers from the Poletayev Institute for Theoretical and Historical Studies in the Humanities have decided to talk to HSE ‘veterans’ about the beginning of the Institute’s research schools and look at the results achieved over the last 25 years. In addition, goals for future development will also be examined. |
September | HSE QuestHSE’s campus is becoming bigger and more complex. We’ve already lost a couple of fighters in the passage between Myasnitskaya and Krivokolenny, while the number of those who went to Kirpichnaya and never returned is much higher. We’ll be boosting awareness about our campus’ layout through one of our favorite activities – a game! |
September | International Conference on Applied Research in Economics (iCare5)This ‘anti-versify’ is being celebrated all over the country. For instance, this year, the HSE campus in Perm will be bringing scholars together from all over the world for the anniversary, signified by the fifth session of the Applied Research in Economics Conference, which took place in the UK last year. |
October | International Conference of Higher Education ResearchersOne of HSE’s favourite things is studying ourselves and other academic institutions. This is as thrilling as making faces in the mirror. But what we do is still quite serious, as we are professional researchers. The International Conference of Higher Education Researchers will reveal to you everything about universities and their transformations. |
October | Sixth Moscow International Conference in Financial EconomicsHSE is largely known as a union of institutions, whose years of foundation may vary. For example, the ‘anti-versary’ year marks 20 years since the creation of the International College of Economics and Finance (ICEF). This is, basically, the first HSE institutional project. The International Conference in Financial Economics is an excellent demonstration of ICEF researchers’ high level of professionalism and highly developed international cooperation. |
November | The Great University SpreeWe are expecting HSE’s historic return to the building on Pokrovsky Boulevard. This means we’ll have all the reason for a big celebration – a spacious venue, a reason represented by the ‘anti-versary’, student teams of every sort, and a great desire to stir something up. We are truly looking forward to this great festival/housewarming party! |
November | HSE Geography - book presentationThe geography of HSE is much wider than simply the four cities where its campuses are located. It also includes a lot of cities, where we grew up, and which influenced our academic (and not only academic) development! These are the cities where we taught and wrote doctoral theses, attended our first lectures, spoke at conferences, and met new colleagues and academic peers. This includes many places in Russia and throughout the world. HSE’s academics – both renowned scholars and younger lecturers and researchers – commented on HSE‘s extended geography for its 25th ‘anti-versary’. |

December | ‘Voice of the People’Over the period of its existence, HSE has been either an object of admiration or insult. The first is not that interesting, but the second phenomenon has seen some remarkable conclusions! Let’s look at the best of the last 25 years – plots, accusations, suspicions, and swearing – everything from social media, the press and online feedback. |
December | Top-25 Professions You Can Study at HSEShamans and mammoth hunters aren’t quite in demand on the job market today, even though these were desirable career trajectories some time ago. So, which of today’s professions will still be in demand in 50 years’ time? As skilled researchers, we should be able to predict this! |
